How prevalent is Sleep Apnea?
Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a vastly under-diagnosed problem in the United States, it is estimated that only 10% of those with Sleep Apnea have properly identified and diagnosed.
Brunswick Community Hospital has begun screening for Sleep Apnea...they are finding approximately 30 percent are at high risk for having Sleep Apnea.
Recent National Studies estimate:
- 40% of adults over 40 snore. (approx. 87 million Americans)
- 12% of men and 5% of women suffer from some form of Sleep Apnea. (Approx. 40 million Americans)
- Less than 10% of Sleep Apnea sufferers have been diagnosed (approx. 3 million Americans) of those, less than 25% have been successfully treated.
More Locally, Brunswick Community Hospital has begun screening for Sleep Apnea with all patients that schedule an elective surgery, and they are finding approximately 30 percent are at high risk for having Sleep Apnea.
